Name: Aquilegia: Common Columbine Seed

Latin Name: Aquilegia vulgaris

Plant Type: Perennial

Plant Height: 50 cm

Description: Common Aquilegia produces beautiful purple flowers early in the year. It has been growing in gardens for centuries and is still very popular for good reason. It is a very beneficial flower for bees. When it is raining, bees can crawl into the hanging flower and feed where it is dry inside the petals. It also makes a very nice cut flower.

Common Aquilegia is also well known by the names Common Columbine, Granny's Nightcap and Granny's Bonnet!

Seed Origin: Germany

Sowing: March to May or September to October

Flowering: May to July

How To Grow Aquilegia From Seed: Using seedling modules or small pots, fill each cell/pot with compost. Flatten the compost and water it. Sow a pinch of seed in each cell/pot. Very lightly cover the seed with fine compost or vermiculite. Dampen the seeds with a water spray bottle so as not to wash away the seeds. Germination can take up to 4 weeks. Keep the surface damp throughout this time. When the seedlings establish, thin to leave only the strongest one in each cell/pot.

Transplant out to the garden when the young plants start to outgrow their pots/cells, and frost risk has passed. Alternatively, sow in Autumn for early flowers the following year. Aquilegia can grow to 60cm to 70cm in height.

Aquilegia self seeds easily, remove dead flower heads if you do not want it to spread. Cut back foliage of established plants in September to encourage fresh leaf growth.
