How to Grow Drumstick Allium Bulbs in Ireland

Plant Allium sphaerocephalon bulbs in autumn for an unusual and eye-catching display in July. This compact allium performs well in sunny, free-draining spots, making it ideal for Irish borders, prairie-style planting, and wildlife gardens.

  • Planting Depth: 6–8 cm deep

  • Spacing: 5–10 cm apart

  • Soil: Well-drained soil – sandy or loamy preferred

  • Sunlight: Full sun

  • Blooming Time: July

  • Height: 50cm

  • Growing Tip: Plant in groups for the best effect. Pairs beautifully with grasses and late-flowering perennials. Once established, they will naturalise and return reliably each year.

Allium sphaerocephalon is a magnet for bees and other pollinators, providing a valuable late nectar source long after spring bulbs have faded.
