Name: Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli
Latin Name: Brassica oleracea
Description: Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli is a traditional overwintering brassica grown for its delicious, tender purple florets harvested in late winter and early spring.
Sown in summer, it develops strong plants through autumn and stands well through frost, producing a steady supply of sweet, nutty shoots from January to April.
Exceptionally hardy and highly productive, it’s one of the most valuable vegetables for filling the winter hungry gap, providing fresh, home-grown greens when little else is available.
Sowing: June to July
Harvesting: January to April
How To Grow Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli From Seed: Sow seeds outdoors from June to July in a seedbed or trays, 1 cm deep, and keep moist. Germination takes 7–14 days.
When seedlings are 10–15 cm tall, transplant to their final position in firm, fertile soil in full sun. Water well after planting and during dry spells.
Plants grow through autumn and overwinter in the ground. Harvest begins from January to April by cutting central spears first, then side shoots regularly to encourage continued cropping. Regular picking improves total yield.
