Description: Elephant Garlic cloves produce giant, mild-flavoured bulbs that are very versatile when it comes to cooking with them - use them in stir fries, soup, mashed potato, garlic butter etc. They also roast really well.
Despite its name, elephant garlic more closely related to leeks than true garlic. Ideal for planting in Ireland’s cool climate for impressive summer harvests.
It is sold by the clove, as the cloves are very large compared to regular garlic, and each clove will produce a giant bulb the following year.
Available in quantities of: 3 cloves & 20 cloves.
Botanical Name: Allium ampeloprasum
Planting: September to December
Origin: France
Certified Organic: No
How To Grow Elephant Garlic in Ireland
-
Planting Time: September – December for best results.
-
Soil Preparation: Choose fertile, free-draining soil in full sun. Avoid freshly manured ground.
-
Planting Depth & Spacing: Plant each clove 10–15 cm deep and 25–30 cm apart, with 40–50 cm between rows to allow for their size.
-
Care: Keep weed-free and water during dry spells in spring.
-
Harvest: When leaves begin to yellow in July–August, lift carefully and dry thoroughly before storage.
-
Tip: Elephant garlic prefers a long growing season. Autumn planting in Ireland ensures the biggest bulbs.
