Name: Lavender: English
Latin Name: Lavandula angustifolia
Plant Type: Perennial
Plant Height: 40-60 cm
Description: English Lavender produces beautiful, bee friendly, deep purple, fragrant flowers. Growing Lavender from seed takes patience. The seed can be slow to germinate, taking 3 to 6 weeks. Lavender also does not always flower in its first year of life. This beautiful plant is worth the wait though, as it will flower every summer after, once it is cared for.
Seed Origin: Netherlands
Sowing: February to May
Flowering: July to August
How To Grow English Lavender From Seed: Lavender seed is best started indoors. Using seedling modules or small pots, sow a pinch of seed in each cell/pot. Cover the seed very lightly. Do not black out light, as light helps Lavender germinate. Make sure the soil is kept moist. When the seedlings establish, thin to leave only the strongest one in each cell/pot.
When the seedlings get their first set of true leaves, transplant them to bigger pots (10cm). When all frost risk has passed, transplant to their final spot. Lavender does best in full sun.
From year 2, prune lavender every year after it has flowered to prevent the plant from becoming woody.
