How to Grow Galanthus nivalis Snowdrop Bulbs in Ireland

Plant snowdrop bulbs in autumn for very early blooms from January to March. Snowdrops thrive in cool, moist, humus-rich soil and do best in partial shade, making them perfect for naturalising in woodland edges or under deciduous trees.

  • Planting Depth: 5–8 cm deep

  • Spacing: 5–10 cm apart

  • Soil: Moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil

  • Sunlight: Partial shade or dappled sunlight

  • Blooming Time: January to March

  • Height: 10–15 cm

  • Growing Tip: For best results, plant in natural-looking drifts and avoid disturbing them once planted. Snowdrops spread slowly over time and can form beautiful carpets.

Galanthus nivalis is one of the earliest and most reliable flowers for bees, offering nectar and pollen in late winter, when food sources are scarce.
