Name: Tomato: Roma VF
Latin Name: Solanum lycopersicum
Description: Roma VF Tomato is one of the most popular plum tomato varieties worldwide, valued for its productivity and versatility in the kitchen.
The “VF” stands for resistance to Verticillium and Fusarium wilts, making it a reliable choice for home gardeners. Plants are compact and determinate, producing heavy clusters of oval, meaty fruits with few seeds and low juice content. Excellent for sauces, pastes, and canning,
Roma VF typically matures in 75–80 days from transplanting. A dependable, semi-modern classic, it’s not strictly an heirloom but is open-pollinated and widely grown for its culinary quality.
Growing Habit: Determinate
Sowing: February to May
Harvesting: July to October
How To Grow Roma Tomatoes From Seed: Roma Tomato seeds can be sown in small pots or seedling modules, indoors in early Spring. Germination is most successful at temperatures of 20°C or above. A heat mat or heated propagator may be needed to achieve this. Plant two seeds in each pot/cell. When the seedlings establish, thin to leave only the strongest one in each cell/pot.
When seedlings get to about 8cm tall, they can be planted into larger pots.
Tomatoes need heat and do best in greenhouses/polytunnels. If growing them outside, put them in a warm sunny area of the garden.
Plants will need to be supported by a stake or something similar to help the plant grow upwards and bear the fruit.
Seed count is approximate.
