Name: Turnip: Purple Top Milan

Latin Name: Brassica rapa

Description: Turnip Purple Top Milan is an old vegetable with a beautiful bi-coloured turnip that tastes very good, even when it’s still raw.

Seed Origin: Italy

Sowing: March to August

Harvesting: May to November

How To Grow Purple Top Milan Turnip From Seed: Early crops can be started in seedling modules or small pots. Sow a pinch of seed in each cell/pot and cover lightly with compost. When the seedlings are established and frost risk has passed, transplant them to their final place.

Alternatively, sow directly into shallow drills once frost risk has passed. Sow the seeds thinly and cover lightly with soil. When the seedlings establish, thin them to leave only the strongest one every 15cm.

Turnips are fast-growing and need plenty of water to make sure they do not go woody and run to seed. They grow as a bunch and can be harvested from golf ball size. Do not let them grow too much as their texture becomes drier and more fibrous the bigger they get.

Seed count is approximate.

Amazing Fast Germination!!

I sowed a small row of these on the 19th of September. On the 21st of September, while misting the row, I noticed a bunch of green tiny 2 leaved seedlings and confirmed they are indeed turnip seedlings!

So some of these have only taken 3 days to germinate! I'm astonished, really.

What I did do however, which have contributed to the fast germination is that when I water seeds, I "mist" them with a sprayer to help prevent the seeds from being moved around.

I also added at the rate of 1 Tablespoon per 10 litres of water, Acadian Marine Extract Powder. I recently discovered this product from Canada (Nova Scotia) and available in Greece and it seems almost like Black Magic it's positive benefits in general in the garden.

I don't know for sure, but the fact at least some of these seeds germinated in less than 72 hours is pretty impressive to me.

Milan Turnip

Been growing this variety a few years. Small, quick growing turnip. Grows reliably almost year round.

Grew Quickly

Surprised at how quickly these were ready to pick. Smaller than a turnip you'd buy in the shop but I've tto many to eat now anyway!
