Name: Yarrow
Latin Name: Achillea millefolium
Plant Type: Perennial
Plant Height: 40 cm
Description: Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a perennial wildflower native to Ireland, often found growing in meadows, roadsides, and grasslands. It produces delicate, feathery foliage and flat clusters of white or pale pink flowers from June to September, attracting bees, hoverflies, and butterflies – making it an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens.
Yarrow thrives in poor, dry soils and full sun, making it ideal for wildflower meadows, naturalistic borders, or low-maintenance gardens. Traditionally valued in Irish folklore for its medicinal properties, it remains a favourite for supporting biodiversity and adding a soft, natural look to any garden.
Seed Origin: Germany
Sowing: February to June
Flowering: June to September
How To Grow Yarrow From Seed: Sow Yarrow seeds indoors from February to April, or direct sow outdoors from April to June once the soil has warmed. Scatter thinly on the soil surface and press down gently.
Yarrow seeds need light to germinate, so do not cover the seeds with soil. Keep moist until germination, which takes 14–21 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant or thin to 30–40 cm apart. Choose a sunny, well-drained site, as yarrow thrives in poor or sandy soil and needs little feeding.
Once established, it is drought tolerant and will flower from June to September, returning year after year as a reliable, low-maintenance perennial.
