Name: Aubergine: Violetta Lunga 3
Latin Name: Solanum melongena
Description: Aubergine Violetta lunga 3 is an early variety of Aubergine. It produces beautiful slender, deep purple fruits with green tops. Aubergines are best suited for growing in a greenhouse. Aubergine is also commonly called Eggplant.
Seed Origin: Netherlands
Sowing: February to April
Harvesting: July to September
How To Grow Aubergine From Seed: Sowing can begin indoors from late February. Sow in small pots or seedling modules. Sow 1 - 2 seeds per pot/cell. Cover lightly with compost and keep moist. Aubergine seed germination will be best if kept at room temperature while germinating. Germination can also be improved by soaking the seeds in water for 12 hours before planting.
Transplant the seedlings into larger pots once they are 10cm in size. The seedlings can be moved outside once the risk of frost has passed. Acclimatise them to the outside by leaving them outside during the day and taking them in at night for 10 to 14 days. Aubergine does not like the cold and will grow best in a greenhouse.
