Name: Cauliflower: Romanesco
Latin Name: Brassica oleracea
Description: Romanesco cauliflower is a beautiful, old Italian heirloom variety of Cauliflower. Sometimes it is also referred to as Broccoli Romanesco. Besides being a striking vegetable to look at, it also tastes great. It tastes somewhere between cauliflower and broccoli, although it has a slightly nuttier and earthier flavour. The taste is mild and slightly sweet, and the texture is tender and crisp when cooked properly.
Seed Origin: Italy
Sowing: March to July
Harvesting: July to October
How To Grow Romanesco Cauliflower From Seed: Romanesco cauliflower seeds can be started indoors from March to April, by sowing them in seedling modules or small pots. Sow 2-3 seeds per pot/cell. When the seedlings establish, remove the weaker seedlings. Transplant to their final growing area when the risk of frost has passed.
Alternatively, sow directly outside from the end of April onwards. Romanesco cauliflower does best in partial shade.
Harvest from the bottom of the plant with a sharp knife when the heads are hard and fully formed.
