How To Grow Indian Tobacco From Seed: Indian Tobacco seeds can be started indoors in Spring, or planted directly outside in Autumn. To start indoors, stratification is recommended to improve germination. This is where the seeds are exposed to a period of cold before planting. Do this by mixing your seeds with some damp growing medium, put the mix in a plastic bag and put it in the fridge. Leave it there for 3 to 4 weeks. When you remove the mix from the fridge, spread it onto an already damp bed of compost in a growing tray, and press it down gently. Some seeds will still germinate even if the seeds are planted without going through the stratification process. Transplant the seedlings outside when the risk of frost has passed.
Alternatively, sow directly outside in Autumn for flowers in the following year.
Indian Tobacco, if started in Spring, will produce a small amount of flowers in its first year, but the main flush of flowers are produced in the second year.
