How to Grow California Poppy From Seed: Choose a sunny position in your garden and sow the seeds evenly, directly into fine soil at a depth of 5mm. Cover the seed lightly with fine soil or compost. The seeds will start to germinate after 10-14 days. Make sure the seed bed is kept moist throughout germination. When the seedlings are 4-8cm tall, thin them to their final spacing of 15-20cm apart.
