Name: Purple Podded Pea: Blauwschokker
Latin Name: Pisum sativum
Description: Purple Podded Pea ‘Blauwschokker’ is a beautiful and productive heritage/heirloom variety from Northern Europe, valued for its deep violet pods and strong, climbing habit.
The pods can be eaten young as mangetout or left to mature for shelling sweet, green peas. Plants grow up to 150–200 cm tall and benefit from sturdy support.
A favourite with traditional gardeners, ‘Blauwschokker’ combines ornamental appeal with excellent flavour and good cold tolerance. Its name translates from Dutch directly to English as “Blue Shocker,” reflecting its vivid colouring and hardy nature. Perfect for adding both beauty and bounty to the vegetable garden.
Seed Origin: Moldova
Sowing: March to June
Harvesting: June to September
How To Grow Purple Podded Pea Blauwschokker From Seed: Blauwschokker pea can be started indoors from March. Using seedling modules or small pots, sow 2 seeds in each cell/pot. When the seedlings establish, thin to leave only the strongest one. Transplant out to the garden 2 to 3 weeks after germination.
Alternatively, sow directly outside from April onwards, once the soil has warmed.
As a tall climbing pea, it needs strong support such as netting, canes, or a trellis, growing up to 150–200cm high. Keep soil moist, especially during flowering and pod formation. Germination typically takes 7–14 days. Harvest young pods early as mangetout, or allow them to mature for shelling peas. Regular picking encourages further production. Peas prefer cooler conditions and usually crop 10+ weeks from sowing.
