Latin Name: Solanum lycopersicum
Description: Rio Grande is an old Heirloom determinate tomato Variety. It produces large elongated, somewhat pear shaped fruits. The fruits are very firm and do not contain a lot of juice. Rio Grande Tomato is suitable for making pasta sauces and purees with. The plants will grow to about 6ft tall and each fruit weighs approx 100g to 150g.

How To Grow Rio Grande Tomatoes From Seed: Rio Grande Tomato seeds can be sown in small pots or seedling modules, indoors in early Spring. They can be planted directly outside in pots from April onwards. Plant two seeds in each pot/cell. When the seedlings establish, thin to leave only the strongest one in each cell/pot.
When seedlings get to about 8cm tall, they can be planted into larger pots.
Tomatoes need heat and do best in greenhouses. If growing them outside, put them in a warm sunny area of the garden.
Plants will need to be supported by a stake or something similar to help the plant grow upwards and bear the fruit.
