How to Grow Fritillaria Mealagris Bulbs in Ireland

Plant Fritillaria meleagris bulbs in autumn for a beautiful spring display. These bulbs prefer moist, humus-rich soil and thrive in part-shade to full sun. They’re ideal for naturalising in lawns, wildflower meadows, or damp borders, especially in Irish gardens where spring moisture is common.

  • Planting Depth: 8–10 cm deep

  • Spacing: 7–10 cm apart

  • Soil: Moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil (they dislike drying out in spring)

  • Sunlight: Partial shade or full sun

  • Blooming Time: March to April

  • Height: 30cm

  • Growing Tip: Great for naturalising – plant in groups or drifts for a natural meadow look. Allow foliage to die back fully after flowering to feed the bulbs for next year.

Fritillaria meleagris is excellent for pollinators, especially bees, offering a rare and valuable early-season nectar source in a naturalistic planting scheme.
