How to Grow Saffron Crocus Bulbs in Ireland

Plant Crocus sativus bulbs in September to December for saffron blooms in October or November. In Ireland, if planted later in autumn, they may skip their first flowering and begin blooming the following autumn, once established.

  • Planting Depth: 10–12 cm deep

  • Spacing: 10 cm apart

  • Soil: Well-drained, sandy or loamy soil – avoid heavy clay

  • Sunlight: Full sun

  • Blooming Time: October to November (from year two if first planted after September)

  • Height: 15 cm

  • Harvesting Tip: Pick saffron threads (the red stigmas) the day the flowers open and dry them indoors for culinary use.

Crocus sativus thrives in the Irish climate if planted in a warm, well-drained, sunny spot. Ideal for growing in pots or raised beds where drainage can be controlled.
