How to Grow Mixed Species Crocus Bulbs in Ireland

Plant small-flowering crocus bulbs in autumn for a charming early spring display in February to March. These hardy, low-growing crocuses are ideal for naturalising in grass or gravel, thriving in Ireland’s cool, moist spring conditions.

  • Planting Depth: 5–7 cm deep

  • Spacing: 5–8 cm apart

  • Soil: Well-drained soil (tolerates poor or rocky ground)

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light shade

  • Blooming Time: February to March

  • Height: 8–12 cm

  • Growing Tip: Plant in drifts or scatter and plant where they fall for a natural look. Allow foliage to die back completely after flowering to feed the bulbs. Ideal for planting under deciduous trees, in lawns, or among other early bulbs like snowdrops and winter aconites.

Botanical crocus species are incredibly valuable for bees, providing early-season nectar and pollen that support pollinators emerging on mild late-winter days.
