How To Use A Bypass Loppers
Bypass loppers are designed to give clean, precise cuts on live, green wood, making them one of the most important pruning tools in any garden. Their scissor-action blades help you prune plants without crushing the stem, encouraging healthy growth. Here’s how to use bypass loppers safely and effectively.
1. Choose the Right Branches
Bypass loppers work best on live branches up to the tool’s recommended cutting diameter (for most models, usually 30–40mm). Use them for shrubs, fruit trees, hedges and young branches that need shaping or thinning.
2. Position the Blades Correctly
Place the sharp cutting blade on the side of the branch you want to keep, ensuring a clean cut that won’t damage the remaining wood. Bypass blades work like scissors, so accurate positioning matters.
3. Use Both Hands for Control
Hold the handles firmly with both hands and squeeze smoothly. Don’t jerk or twist the loppers, this keeps the cut clean and reduces strain on the tool and your hands.
4. Take Advantage of Leverage
If your bypass loppers have long or telescopic handles, extend them when cutting thicker branches. The extra leverage gives more cutting power with less effort.
5. Cut at the Right Angle
Aim for a 45-degree angle when cutting live branches. This helps water run off the cut, reducing the risk of rot or disease in the plant.
6. Avoid Dead or Very Thick Wood
Bypass loppers are made for green wood. For hardwood or anything larger than the loppers’ maximum capacity, switch to a pruning saw or anvil loppers to avoid damaging the blades.
7. Keep Blades Clean and Sharp
After use, wipe the blades clean and store the loppers in a dry place. Sharp, clean blades reduce effort and protect your plants from ragged cuts.
