Name: Scotch Heather
Latin Name: Calluna vulgaris
Plant Type: Perennial
Plant Height: 30 cm
Description: Heather seeds are so small, they are almost like dust. 1 milligram of Heather seed should contain, on average 3600 seeds. Growing Heather from seed can take quite a long time and can have mixed results, therefore it is not recommended for the beginner gardener. Heather seed germination is very erratic, and can take 1 to 3 months to germinate. It also doesn’t always produce the exact same plant as its parent plant. The most common colour flower produced from this Heather seed is pink/purple, but it can vary.
Seed Origin: Germnay
Sowing: September to October
Flowering: August to November
How To Grow Heather From Seed: Heather seed is so small it is almost like dust. Mixing it with some sand at the time of sowing will help to get a more even spread of the seeds.
Fill a tray with compost and flatten the compost into the tray. Water the compost before adding the seed/sand mix. Spread the seed/sand mix evenly over the tray of compost. Dampen the seed mix gently with a water sprayer so as not to move the seeds too much. Cover the seed mix, barely, with a very thin layer of vermiculite. This helps keep the seeds moist and helps to keep moss from forming on top of the tray.
Keep the seed tray damp throughout germination using the water spray bottle. Germination can be very erratic, and can take anywhere from 1 to 3 months. Depending on conditions, Heather seedlings will be large enough to transplant into larger pots after 6 to 9 months.
Seed count is approximate.
