Name: Thyme
Latin Name: Thymus vulgaris
Description: Thyme is a herb that is used in cooking and also for its medicinal characteristics. The leaves and tops of the stalks are used freshly as well as dried.
Seed Origin: Netherlands
Sowing: March to August
Harvesting: April to October
How To Grow Thyme From Seed: Using seedling modules or small pots, sow a pinch of Thyme seed in each pot and barely cover with compost as the seeds are very small. After germination, thin the seedlings to leave the strongest one in each pot.
When the seedlings grow to about 10cm in height, transplant them into bigger pots or to their final place in the garden, once the risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, sow the seed directly in the garden once all frost risk has passed.
Thyme should be harvested sparingly in its first year to allow the plant to develop. It will produce flowers in its second year. Prune after it has flowered to prevent it from becoming woody.
Seed count is approximate.
