Name: Tomato: Matina

Latin Name: Solanum lycopersicum

Description: Tomato Matina is an heirloom tomato that produces round and tasty tomatoes that ripen very early. The tomatoes have a firm outer skin, but on the inside, they are juicy and tender with a rich flavour.

Growing Habit: Indeterminate

Sowing: March to May

Harvesting: July to October

How To Grow Matina Tomatoes From Seed: Seeds can be sown indoors in pots or seedling modules as early as February. They can be planted directly outside in pots from April onwards.

When seedlings get to about 8cm tall, they can be thinned and planted in their own pot.

Tomatoes need heat and do best in greenhouses. If growing them outside, put them in a warm sunny area of the garden.

Plants will need to be supported by a stake or something similar to help the plant grow upwards and bear the fruit.

Seed count is approximate.

So Far, So Good!

I sowed several of these seeds on August 18th, 2024 and by the 22nd, noticed that at least two had germinated. Now, on the 25th, am seeing more that have germinated.

Some may think it is odd that I am sowing tomato seeds in August, however I'm presently located in Greece. Greeks themselves don't put out tomato plants in August, but in my opinion, with the months getting into November still being relatively warm, it's a wasted opportunity to not try, especially if you like tomatoes.

Last year, I had tried a variety that I sowed in August as an experiment and was surprised to be getting tomatoes into February and the plant itself survived (you could say even thrived) through the Greek winter, which saw a few nights drop below freezing and even some light snow.

I chose this variety (Matina) to experiment with once again as I have read that they are quite resistant to cold. I'll update this review later as we go "grow along" into the autumn and winter months.

Edit: Add photo of two of the Matina variety plants, exactly 1 month after sowing the seeds (September 18th, 2024). I will harden them off a bit and get them used to the blazing sun here and transplant to the garden in a few days.
