Name: Aubergine: Black Beauty
Latin Name: Solanum melongena
Description: Black Beauty Aubergine is a classic, high-yielding heirloom variety producing large, glossy deep-purple fruits. Known for its rich flavour and smooth texture, it’s perfect for roasting, grilling, and baking. Reliable and easy to grow, it performs well in greenhouses or sunny outdoor spots, making it a favourite among home gardeners.
Seed Origin: Netherlands
Sowing: February to April
Harvesting: July to September
How To Grow Black Beauty Aubergine From Seed: Sowing can begin indoors from late February. Sow in small pots or seedling modules. Sow 1 - 2 seeds per pot/cell. Cover lightly with compost and keep moist. Aubergine seed germination is most successful at temperatures of 22°C or above. A heat mat or heated propagator may be needed to achieve this. Germination can take up to 3 weeks.
Transplant the seedlings into larger pots once they are 10cm in size. The seedlings can be moved outside once the risk of frost has passed. Acclimatise them to the outside by leaving them outside during the day and taking them in at night for 10 to 14 days. Aubergine does not like the cold and will grow most reliably in a greenhouse or polytunnel."
