Name: Beetroot: Tondo di Chioggia

Latin Name: Beta vulgaris

Description: Beetroot Chioggia is an old Beetroot variety that originates in the Italian village of Chioggia. The inside of the Chiogga Beetroot has beautiful red-white rings and a soft sweet taste. It can be eaten raw, so the nice colour of the beetroot can be seen on your dish.

Germination Rate: 91%

Seed Origin: Netherlands

Sowing: March to July

Harvesting: June to November

How To Grow Tondo di Chioggia Beetroot From Seed: Sow the seeds in a prepared drill, planting 2 seeds together every 10cm. Cover with soil. When the seedlings establish, thin to leave only the strongest seedling in place. Keep the growing site weed free.

Your beetroot will be ready to harvest when the roots are somewhere between the size of a golf ball and a tennis ball.

If you have limited space, this round beetroot can also be grown in pots.

Sow in succession every couple of weeks to have a steady harvest throughout the year.

Seed count is approximate.

Quick Germination

I first came across this variety of beets about 10 years ago at a Farmer's Market in Orangeville, Ontario, Canada. The vendor called them "Candy Cane Beets."

Intrigued, I purchased several and really enjoyed them. When I discovered Seeds Ireland had seeds available, I couldn't resist.

I planted a good number of seeds into a seed tray on the 21st of Sept. 2024, and by the 25th, observed that several had germinated. Today (27th), am very pleased by what I am seeing as far as germination rates. I'll transplant the seedlings shortly into my garden and will update the review as they continue to grow.
