How To Grow Cowslip Primrose From Seed: Cowslip seed needs a period of cold to improve its germination. It is best sown in Autumn or early Spring. Using seedling modules or small pots, fill with damp compost and sow the seed on the surface of the compost. Press the seed into the compost but do not cover it as it needs light to germinate. Keep the trays outside or in a greenhouse. Germination can be erratic and take up to 5 weeks. Seed sown in Autumn will sprout in Spring the following year.
Alternatively, seeds can be started indoors in Late Spring/Summer. To improve the germination of your seeds, mimic the cold the seeds would naturally receive outside over Winter. Do this by mixing your seeds with some damp growing medium, put the mix in a plastic bag and put it in the fridge. Leave it there for 2 to 3 weeks. Then plant the seeds in pots or directly outside.
Do not throw the trays out if the seed does not germinate. Germination of Cowslip seeds can sometimes be random and occur much later when you are not expecting it.
