Name: Dandelion
Latin Name: Taraxacum officinale
Description: Dandelion is most commonly known as a weed! Its leaves however, can be eaten in salads or used to make tea. It is now very popular for its medicinal value. The leaves are best consumed before the plant flowers. Remove the flower heads before they go to seed so your garden does not get overrun with dandelions. All parts of the plant are edible.
Seed Origin: Italy
Sowing: March to June…..September to October
Harvesting: March to September
How To Grow Dandelions From Seed: Using seedling modules or small pots, sow 2 seeds in each cell/pot. Dampen the soil before sowing the seeds. Press the seeds into the soil, cover them very lightly with soil or not at. Germination takes up to 2 weeks. When the seedlings establish, thin to leave only the strongest seedling in each cell/pot.
When they outgrow the module or pots, transplant each one into a large pot. Dandelions have tap roots that need space to grow.
The leaves should be ready to harvest after 11 to 14 weeks. Remove flower stalks so the plant puts more energy into growing leaves. That is unless you are growing the plant for the flowers. Remove flower heads before they go to seed to avoid a dandelion infestation in your garden!
