Common Name: Fennel: Florence Fino
Latin Name: Foeniculum vulgare var. Azoricum
Description: Florence Fino fennel is a popular variety known for its delicate, sweet flavour and crisp texture. It has feathery foliage and a bulbous base. It can be used in various dishes such as soups and salads. It has a very mild liquorice-like taste.
Seed Origin: Netherlands
Sowing: April to June
Harvesting: August to November
How To Grow Fennel From Seed: Sow seed directly into the growing site from April, and then in succession up until July. Prepare the soil well. A rich moist soil is preferred.
Sow in shallow drills 1cm deep, in rows 45cm apart. Thin seedlings as they grow allowing approximately 45cm between the plants. Keep weed free and watered if conditions are dry, to prevent bolting.
The bulbs are ready when they reach between about 8-10cm wide.
Seed can also be started in modules and planted out, but Fennel dislikes root disturbance and the modules must not be allowed to dry out.
