Common Name: French Marigold: Small Flowered
Latin Name: Tagetes patula nana
Plant Type: Annual
Plant Height: 20-40 cm
Description: Small flowered French Marigold has single-petaled, warm yellow flowers with dark spots in the centre. If you cut off the first buds, before they flower, it will promote the plant to grow bushier and produce lots more flowers. Pinching back the first buds will result in bushier plants that produce more flowers. Small flowered French Marigold has been known to help control nematodes, and is often planted as a companion crop in the vegetable garden.
Sowing: March to June
Flowering: June to September
How to Grow French Marigold From Seed: Sow indoors in early spring from February to March. Or sow outdoors in April-June for flowers in June to September. Sow seeds evenly in pots or seed starting modules.
Lightly cover the seeds with soil, as the seeds need light to germinate. Germination can take 2 to 3 weeks. Keep the soil moist during that time.
Thin the seedlings when they become established. Transplant outdoors or into their final place when they are 7cm tall. French Marigold is also a tasty edible flower. French Marigolds flower for an extended period, meaning they are of great benefit to bees and other pollinators.
