Description: Globe Artichoke is a perennial vegetable known for its striking appearance and delicious, edible flower buds. It's a member of the thistle family and is highly valued for its tender hearts and flavourful leaf bases. Globe artichokes are also ornamental, with their silvery-green foliage and tall flower stalks adding beauty to any garden.
Amount Of Roots Per Pack: 1
Planting: March to May
Harvesting: July to October
Planting Depth: 10 -15cm
Plant Height: 120 - 150cm
Plant Spacing: 90 - 120cm
How To Grow Globe Artichoke Plants From Roots:
1. Choose the Right Location
Sunlight: Select a sunny spot with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Soil: Use well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Globe artichokes prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
2. Prepare the Soil
Remove weeds and loosen the soil to a depth of 30 cm (12 inches).
Mix in compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility and structure.
3. Plant the Roots
Dig a hole about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
Place the root in the hole with the crown (where shoots emerge) just above or level with the soil surface.
Cover the roots with soil, firm it gently, and water thoroughly.
4. Space the Plants
Space the roots 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) apart.
Leave 120–150 cm (4–5 feet) between rows for proper airflow and ease of maintenance.
5. Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the growing season.
Avoid waterlogging, as it can lead to root rot.
6. Fertilise
Apply a balanced fertiliser (e.g., 10-10-10) during planting.
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season to encourage healthy growth and flower bud production.
7. Mulch
Add a layer of mulch around the plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
8. Care and Maintenance
Remove any weeds that compete with the plants.
Prune older, yellowing leaves to promote new growth.
Stake the plants if they become too tall or heavy.
9. Harvest
Buds are ready to harvest when they are firm and closed, typically in late summer to early autumn.
Cut the stem about 5 cm (2 inches) below the bud.
10. Winter Protection
Cut back the foliage in late autumn.
Cover the crown with straw or mulch to protect it from frost.
Great Irish site! - Ordered a 10kg bag of grass seed and was shipped same day and arrived two days later and shipping was free! I would recommend Seeds Ireland and will absolutely buy from them again!
Great service, the packets of seeds came swiftly and the order was complete. Great choice on the website, some organic seeds also. Very hopeful for a good germination.
Couldn’t recommend enough. Brian is amazing to deal with, so helpful. The prices are so reasonable, and the shipping is always quick. I have placed multiple orders this year and last year and never had an issue. Actually, every single seed I have planted this year has taken - not one single bad seed in multiple packets. Highly highly recommend

Good information on source of seeds and organic credentials.
Delivery is via An Post - very quick and efficient with notices sent via email so the delivery can be tracked.
Good selection of seeds available, the packs are nicer than some others, mini zip lock bags inside rather than the usual rip open foil type. Delivery was very quick.
