Name: Kale: Nero di Toscana

Latin Name: Brassica oleracea

Description: Nero di Toscana is an old Italian variety of Kale that has become extremely popular in recent years. It is easy to grow and can withstand cold weather. It has many other common names such as Cavale Nero, Black Tuscany Kale or Black Cabbage.

Seed Origin: Netherlands

Sowing: April to June

Harvesting: September to November

How To Grow Nero di Toscana Kale From Seed: Sow your Kale seeds thinly, directly outside in a row and cover with 1.5cm of damp soil.

After about 6 weeks, when the plants are roughly 20cm tall, transplant them to their final position, leaving a spacing of 50cm between each plant. After this, Kale does not need much maintenance as it is very strong.

Nero di Toscana Kale does not withstand harsh cold as well as other Kale varieties. It is best to harvest it before December.

Seed count is approximate.

Fast Germination

Kale seeds generally take a minimum of 6 days to germinate, so I was surprised to see two out of the four seeds germinating after only 4 days! Mind you, it has been warm days and nights here which may have something to do with the speedy germination.

On the fifth day, I could see the tiny bits of green just at the surface of the soil in the seed pods I had planted, of the other two kale seeds.

My plan is to get these into the garden in a few weeks as the weather cools off and then every two weeks, start new seedlings to have a winter supply of kale here in Greece, especially as this variety can withstand cold. In my part of Greece, while we can have temps just above 20C during the day, we an also see temps drop below freezing at night. I'll update this review later as these kale plants continue to grow and with my experience of attempts at regular sowing a couple of weeks apart.
