1g Honesty Seeds [approx]
Name: Honesty
Latin Name: Lunaria annua
Plant Type: Biennial
Plant Height: 80 - 90cm
Description: Honesty is a charming biennial with vibrant purple blooms in spring and summer, followed by unique, silvery seed pods that add beauty to dried arrangements. Easy to grow and great for pollinators, it thrives in sun or partial shade. Self-seeds freely for naturalised displays year after year.
Because of its striking silvery, translucent seed pods that resemble coins, it is also often referred to by its other nickname Silver Dollar Plant.
Seed Origin: Holland
Sowing: June to August
Flowering: April to June (Year 2)
How To Grow Honesty From Seed: Sow Honesty seeds (Lunaria annua) directly outdoors in mid summer for the best results. Choose a well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded location. Loosen the soil and remove any weeds before sowing. Scatter the seeds thinly and lightly cover them with a fine layer of soil, keeping the area moist until germination, which typically occurs within two to three weeks. Once seedlings appear, thin them to about 20-30 cm apart to allow enough space for healthy growth.
In the first year, Lunaria annua develops a low-growing rosette of leaves. During its second year, it produces tall stems with clusters of vibrant purple flowers from late spring to early summer, attracting bees and other pollinators. After flowering, the plant forms its distinctive silvery seed pods, which dry naturally on the plant. These papery, coin-like seed cases can be left in the garden for winter interest or harvested for dried floral arrangements.
Honesty is a hardy, self-seeding biennial, meaning that once established, it will readily reseed itself, creating naturalised drifts in the garden year after year. To encourage continuous blooms, collect and resow Honesty seeds each season. Water plants moderately, particularly in dry spells, but avoid overwatering as Lunaria annua thrives in moderately fertile, well-drained soil without excessive feeding. Suitable for cottage gardens, borders, and wildflower meadows, Honesty seeds are easy to grow and provide long-lasting beauty throughout the seasons.
