Name: Onion: Red Baron
Latin Name: Allium cepa
Description: Red Baron onion has a nice red colour and a strong flavour. It can be grown to full size or also as a bunching onion. It can do well in heavy soil. It also stores well.
Seed Origin: Italy
Sowing: March to May
Harvesting: August to October
How To Grow Red Baron Onion From Seed: Prepare shallow drills to sow your onion seed directly into. Leave a spacing of 30cm between the drills. Sow the seeds thinly, and cover lightly with soil. When the seedlings establish to roughly 5cm in height, thin them to leave the strongest plant every 10cm. Alternatively, start the seeds in pots/seedling modules and transplant to the final growing are when the seedlings are well established.
Mulching around the plants will help to keep moisture in, and also reduce weeds. Remove mulch when the onion bulbs have developed, to expose them to the sun.
When the leaves start to die off in late Summer/Autumn, your onions should be harvested for storage. Let the harvested onions dry out in the sun, or another alternative way for a few days before storing them.
