Latin Name: Citrullus lanatus
Description: Watermelon Sugar Baby produces beautiful small watermelons that can weigh up to 1.5kg. It will do best when grown in a greenhouse as it requires heat. Watermelon plants also require a good bit of space, with each plant needing roughly 1.5m of its own space.
Seed Origin: Netherlands
Sowing: April to May
Harvesting: July to September
How To Grow Watermelon From Seed: Using seedling modules or small pots, sow 2 seeds in each cell/pot in fine compost. Keep the compost damp throughout germination. The seedlings should emerge within 2 weeks. When the seedlings establish, thin to leave only the strongest one in each cell/pot.
Transplant the seedlings into a greenhouse/polytunnel. A place in full sun is best. As the plants grow, their vines will spread out and take up space, keep this in mind when deciding where to plant them. Make sure pollinators are allowed to enter the greenhouse/Polytunnel to pollinate the plant's flowers.
When the Watermelons lose their shine and start to become dull, they should be checked for ripeness.
Seed count is approximate.
