How To Grow Matsumoto China Aster From Seed: China Aster can be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date. Using seedling modules or small pots, sow 2 seeds in each cell/pot. When the seedlings establish, thin to leave only the strongest one in each cell/pot. Transplant out to the garden when frost risk has passed.
Alternatively, sow directly outside from May onwards when the risk of frost has passed. Sprinkle the seeds thinly into loose soil, directly where they are to grow, and cover lightly with soil. When the seedlings establish, thin them to leave only the strongest plant every 25cm.
If you sow your China Aster seeds successionally, you will have a display of beautiful flowers for a longer period. China Aster can grow up to 90cm in height, which makes it a wonderful cut flower. The tallest of the plants may require support from a bamboo cane, or similar. It is also highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
