Name: Lemon Balm
Latin Name: Melissa officinalis
Description: Lemon balm is a winter-hardy herb with leaves that smell like lemon. The leaves are commonly used for making herbal tea. In the second year the plants really start to blossom. It is suited for drying, as long as the leaves are cut before flowering.
Seed Origin: Netherlands
Sowing: March to August
Harvesting: May to October
How To Grow Lemon Balm From Seed: Using seedling modules or small pots, sow a pinch of Lemon Balm seeds in each pot and very lightly cover with compost. Lemon Balm seed germination can take up to three weeks.
When the seedlings develop their first set of true leaves, transplant them into bigger pots or to their place in the garden, once the risk of frost has passed.
Harvest leaves as required, but make sure to pick above the bottom two true leaves, so the plant can re-grow. Don’t be shy about harvesting Lemon Balm, as this will help it to grow more vigorously.
To Keep Lemon Balm from Spreading too much in your garden, grow it in pots, or cut off its flowers before they have a chance to go to seed.
Lemon Balm seeds can also be planted and grown all year round inside on your window sill.
